It is said that HERITANCE KANDALAMA HOTEL (Sri Lanka) is one of the most most impressive and attractive hotels in Geoffrey Bawa architectures. You will be surprised at its novelty if you stayed.

HERITANCE KANDALAMA has about 8 categories of room.

This article will give you the hints to make the difference for each category clear and which room type to choose ?

Geoffrey Bawa is a very unique architect from Sri Lanka (1919-2003). His works are the origin of tropical resort hotels in Southeast Asia, those are the prevalent architectural style in the latest trends.

Room Types

There are 8 categories in HERITANCE KANDALAMA HOTEL, there are difference with size of room, the view from rooms, specifications with bathroom (with or without bathtub).

The following order is from the lowest grade to the upper categories.

Superior ⇒ panoramic ⇒ Luxury ⇒ Deluxe ⇒ Suite

“SIGIRIYA WING” is leftside, the other side is “DAMBULLA WING” rightside.

Central is the public facility area - Reception, Restaurant & Bar, 2 of 3 swing pools.  (photo click to enlarge).

The view could be boring but this is a part of concept in Geoffrey Bawa architectures.

Once again, this view is a part of concept Geoffrey Bawa prefered.

Its rich greenery is a specialty of HERITANCE KANDALAMA -  “The Forest Hotel”.

DELUXE ROOM (approx. 23㎡)

Sigiriya Wing /  4 and 5th floor / totally 30 rooms

Room size is the same as luxury, view is different as it is located on the upper floor.

If the leaves of ivy does not so grow up to the 4th to 5th floors, you may look beautiful landscapes far away.

Then, this room is with Jacuzzi in bathroom.

It is said that Geoffrey Bawa's favorite room was  Room No.507  (The highest located Corner room of Deluxe Room category ) at the corner of Sigiriya Wing.

He usually stayed at “Room 507” as he was able to enjoy the view from front and side - to 2 directions.

SUITE ROOM (approx. 40㎡)

Dambulla Wing / 2 to 5 floor / totally 12 rooms in

Room size is the same as luxury, view is different as it is located on the upper floor.

The size of bed room is the same as the above, but there is a separate living space in.

LUXURY PANORAMIC ROOM (approx. 57㎡)

Dambulla Wing / 7th floor / the number of this category is 3 rooms in

Large room with almost 60㎡ with outside balcony.

Very good view from this view.

LUXURY SUITE (approx. 67㎡)

Dambulla Wing / 7th floor / the number of this category is 2 rooms

Larger suite of approximately 67 ㎡ including a balcony and bathroom space.

ROYAL SUITE (approx. 120㎡)y

Sigiriya Wing / 5th floor / only 1 room

The best and expensive room in the hotel.

Next, pictures inside of two categories “Luxury” and “Superior” which are most likely to be booked frequently.

Inside LUXURY ROOM

The interior had been renovated by Geoffrey Bawa's beloved disciple architect - Mr. Channa Daswatte (now Trustee of the Bawa Trust).

He took over the Bawa concept to renovate. You will fully feel the original taste with the room interior.

Inside SUPERIOR ROOM

Luckily, I happened to be assigned to corner room  of SUPERIOR category.

There was daylight from another corner in addition to the balcony side, it was nice with quite bright and open.

These picrtures are on the 4th floor. The same room on the upper floor (5th floor) is PANORAMIC ROOM category.

There is no difference about room specification between 4th and 5th floor but view is different.

Normally the left side is wall.

If you stay in this category, it's worth to negotiate if you can stay at a corner room when you check-in. Result will be depended on the availability (vacancy) the time.

Balcony side from the bed.

View from the room. Lake Kandalama behide the forest.

Some part of view was blocked by leaves of ivy.

The atmosphere at night and dawn was enough to feel very good.  This scenery is the intention of Geoffrey Bawa design - It is a sense of unity with nature.

Equipments and Tea sets

As for room amenity and equipments, it is not so luxurious, but it is enough comfortable.

I would say more than the standard 4-star class hotel or higher.

Heritance Kandalama(Sri Lanka)|Superior room | Geoffrey Bawa Architecture

There were an electric kettle, tea, and coffee sets.

The voltage of Sri Lanka is 240V.

Sri Lankan plugs come in various shapes such as “BF (three flat pins)”, “B3 (three round pins)”, and European “C type (two round pins)”.

The power plug shape is different from American and Japanese "A type (2 flat pins)" . A type plug cannot be used  so a plug-shaped converter is required from North American countries such as U.S.A (Japan is also).

Mini-bar. There is no supermarket near the hotel at all (surrounded by forest), but you can easily procure alcohols and soft drinks at restaurants or bar in the hotel.

Heritance Kandalama(Sri Lanka)|Superior room | Geoffrey Bawa Architecture

Slippers are not provided in advance.

But I tried to ask the front desk, they brought me cloth slipper. But it is not the standard equipment.

There are 3 pools in the Heritance Kandalama, all are different types of pools.

When you go to the pool, cloth sandals will be wet and uncomfortable. It would be useful if you had something like CROCS sandals.

Bath Amenity , Bathroom

Heritance Kandalama(Sri Lanka)|Superior room | Geoffrey Bawa Architecture

Bathroom and wash basin. The back left is a shower (Superior room has only a shower without bathtub).

You can see the forest and lake from the window. It is interesting to feel like being seen !?  by animals such as monkeys and squirrels !!

It may be the experience to be harmonized with the natural world in HERITANCE KANDALAMA HOTEL.

Heritance Kandalama(Sri Lanka)|Superior room | Geoffrey Bawa Architecture

Shower booth. There is a shower outlet at a high place.

It ’s a little difficult for short people because it ’s hard to reach it, but it ’s not so big problem.

Heritance Kandalama(Sri Lanka)|Superior room | Geoffrey Bawa Architecture

Wash basin. A full range of amenities is available. Hair dryer and complementary mineral water are here.

Hotel is built in the 1990s, there are some obsolete parts with public area in the hotel but rooms are renovated newly.

My impression is that Bathroom was very orthodox and simple as a luxury hotel.
